Poulton Project Archaeology Courses 2009

January 19, 2009

TRAINING COURSES AT POULTON, CHESHIRE, UK, 2009

Poulton is a multi-period rural site 3 miles south of Chester, that has been yielding evidence of 9500 years of human activity.  Mesolithic flints from 7500 BC, Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery and human cremations; Roman Pottery, brooches, coins, building material, window and goblet glass; Saxon Pottery; Medieval Graves, (13th/14thC) decorated floor tiles, buckles and coins; Civil War artifacts from the 1640’s.

Excavation of a Medieval Chapel and its graveyard has uncovered 415 inhumations; it is estimated that up to 1,800 may be present.

To the north of the graveyard lies a Wood Henge and  a series of Bronze Age Burials (c.1500-900BC),or Ring-Ditches containing cremations.  We now have a reconstruction of a Timber Circle on the exact site where one once would have stood.

A mass of Roman building material (roof-tiles, window-glass), large quantities of artifacts, and several Roman ditches strongly hints at a substantial structure and associated field-systems.
