Volunteer opportunity at Thanet Earth site – Kent

March 24, 2008

Student and volunteer opportunity with Canterbury Archaeological Trust at the Thanet Earth site, near Monkton, Isle of Thanet.

Canterbury Archaeological Trust has been at the Thanet Earth site since last October. From January 2008 there will be opportunity for volunteers to take part on Saturdays. The work will continue until at least May.

What you need to know
You will be under the supervision of CAT staff.

Volunteering is most rewarding if you can commit yourself to several Saturdays. Then both CAT and volunteers stand to benefit from the experience.

A working Saturday is from 8.30am to 3.30pm with breaks.
You will need strong boots. Steel capped are ideal but not compulsory (locally
from the Hire Station, Wincheap industrial estate Canterbury; Colman’s in Herne
Bay. Cheapest around £20).
Warm clothes (including a warm hat) and a packed lunch.
All other necessary equipment will be provided.

Secondary school and university students
We are particularly keen to offer you this hands-on opportunity. If you are considering
Archaeology at university, or are already on a course, practical fieldwork guided by
professional archaeologists will be valuable experience.

Background to the project
In 2008, construction will begin on several large greenhouses, a pack house, education centre and other associated buildings on 90 hectares (about 222 acres) of land for Fresca Group Ltd, the largest Fresh produce supply company in the UK. The project is known as Thanet Earth. Archaeological investigation is taking place in areas where buried remains would otherwise be damaged by the new building works. Archaeologists know from previous excavation and survey in the surrounding area that this part of Thanet has a long history and is worthy of further investigation. The archaeological work at the Thanet Earth site is funded by Fresca Group Ltd.
