Museum Studies (distance learning) – University of Leicester

February 27, 2008

24 months/30 months, part-time, Postgraduate Diploma or Masters Degree
Distance learning students undertake a two year programme of self-directed study. The distance learning programme has two intakes per year in April and October. During this time, students work through six core modules.

Each module demands around three months work (this can be broken down into approximately 12-14 hours work per week) with students taking a break of around three weeks between modules. Students registering for the Postgraduate Diploma will be awarded their qualification on successful completion of all six core modules. Students who register for the Master of Arts or Master of Science also complete all six core modules successfully before undertaking a six month research project – the Masters Dissertation. A Master of Science (MSc) can be awarded in preference to a Master of Arts (MA) where the dissertation concerns a science collection or museum, or where the nature of the investigation can be termed ‘scientific’.

Once a year the department runs a summer school which provides an opportunity to come to Leicester, meet staff and fellow students and participate in a week-long programme of lectures, discussion groups, visits and social events.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should possess at least a good second class honours degree from a recognised university or equivalent qualification, or be able to demonstrate considerable relevant work experience (minimum 5 years).

In addition, many applicants will have some experience, often in a voluntary capacity, of working in museums, galleries or related organisations.

I am the manager of a children’s home. working with children with emotional and behavioural problems. I have one young person possibly interested in archeology. Is there anything for young people to get involved with in the Leicester Area.
    Many thanks for your time.
