Craigievar Dyking – NE Scotland

February 26, 2008

Thistle Camps are residential working holidays organised by The National Trust for Scotland to help in the conservation and management of countryside properties in its care.

Craigievar’s Great Tower has changed very little since it was first built in the early 17th-century.  Surrounding the castle are extensive parkland grounds and woodlands with spectacular views.

This camp will allow volunteers to get to grips with drystane dyking techniques under the guidance of an experienced dyker. We have major dyking repairs to start along the south drive; these walls have been heaved about by mature beech tree roots. The plan is to build a new dyke in front of the old, using recycled and new stone, and possibly do some repair work where feasible. General garden work will be available for those who need a break from dyking and this will be in the recently restored kitchen garden. Whilst it is likely that the castle will be clad in scaffolding and undergoing reharling, the setting is spectacular and tranquil.

You will be staying at the Sir Arthur Grant Residential Centre at Monymusk. The Centre is large, comfortable and well-equipped, with kitchen/dining area, lounge, showers, telephone and drying/laundry room. Please note that duvets and bed linen are provided.

Cost:  £100

Dates:  6 – 13 September 2008
