The Aim of the Short Courses at York is to update professionals’ skills, particularly in the areas of conservation and heritage management. All courses are housed in historic King’s Manor, and training is provided by the Department’s enviable team of specialists in one of the leading centres for research and teaching in the UK.

DECORATIVE HISTORIC PLASTERWORK
30 January-1 February 2008

Aims: to provide, through lectures and a day of practical demonstration, an understanding of an almost universal material, whose use can be utilitarian at one end of the scale and of the highest decorative and artistic value at the other.

THE STUDY AND CONSERVATION OF METALS AND GLASS IN ARCHITECTURE
13-15 February 2008

Aims: to introduce the rich cultural history of the use of diverse metals in architecture, and the technology of the manufacture of the principal ones; to introduce the methodology and principles of repair and conservation of metals (especially cast and wrought iron, lead, aluminium, steel); and to visit workshops where outstanding work is still being done in the Yorkshire Region.

MODERN MATERIALS: particular challenges in conserving them
27-29 February 2008

Aims: to introduce the special problems which arise in repairing or conserving buildings of the mid to late twentieth century made of a variety of materials which often respond particularly badly to water penetration or other forms of neglect.
