Build a Crannog in Ireland

December 4, 2007

Crannog

Training In Contemporary Applications of Traditional European Crafts (TICATEC)

The placement will be based at Brigits Garden an environmental and cultural centre at Connemara, Co. Galway.

The focus of the placement be the reconstruction of a crannog- a traditional lake dwelling during the Iron-Age period. This will involve green woodworking – hazel wattle, oak uprights, ash roofing, etc (We also propose to use a Finnish technique to power wash peel all the timbers).

In addition to the construction there will be some tree planting in order to extend existing native woodland around the crannog.

Students would also help out in additional garden / land / woodland maintenance activities around the centre. Participants will stay in a youth hostel with self catering facilities near to the centre.

Dates:  March – April 2008

Placement duration – 5 weeks

Applicants should be studying a relevant course in the UK and should be able to demonstrate that the experience will be of benefit to their current course of study.
